Doctoral programs that are online may include a residency portion or on-site requirement.

Notable online programs include:

  • Adams State University in Alamosa, CO is an affordable online program with three one-week residencies.
  • Antioch University in Seattle, WA features two four-day residencies.
  • Hampton University in Hampton, VA uses a cohort model which allows students to get to know the other students in their program.

  • Mercer University in Atlanta, GA is a hybrid program with a one-year residency. Students can earn a certificate in online course design.
  • Palo Alto University in Palo Alto, CA offers students the option of studying online or attending courses on campus.

Whether they are online or on campus, doctoral students complete an internship, practicum, and dissertation. When selecting a program, consider the faculty who are on staff that would be a part of your dissertation experience.

A doctorate in school counseling prepares school counselors for advanced roles in the field, including training the next generation of school counselors. Practitioners with a doctorate can take on leadership roles, complete research, and engage in advocacy. Strong doctoral programs include:

  • Coursework in theory, research, supervision, and pedagogy,
  • Supervised practicum and internship,
  • A dissertation that produces research relevant to the field, and
  • Some programs may include a specialization option for counselors that want to specialize in school, career, or another counseling area.

For practitioners who have earned a master’s in school counseling, a doctorate offers additional training in adult learning and research methods, both qualitative and quantitative. Doctoral study also allows practitioners the opportunity to explore an area of focus, like school counseling, and become an expert in that area.

What is the difference between a PhD and EdD?

A PhD (doctor of philosophy) focuses on research and teaching. An EdD (doctor of education) focuses on administration and leadership. PhD programs provide teaching assistantships or have the opportunity to teach alongside experienced professors. In contrast, an EdD graduate will likely pursue an administrative or leadership role. EdD programs often require fewer credits to complete. Both degrees require internships, residencies, and dissertations and students will take core courses including writing, theory, and ethics.

Why pursue a doctorate in counseling?

A doctorate in counseling is a good choice for practitioners who want to expand their leadership, and move into higher education. It is also necessary for practitioners who want to research and publish scholarly articles. Doctoral graduates hold jobs in:

  • Higher education,
  • Curriculum development,
  • Research, and
  • Administration (clinical supervisor, program coordinator).

A doctorate in counseling also provides leadership on a broader level. University faculty are able to have a broader impact on counseling in K-12 education through research, presentation, and advocacy. For example, counselors can engage with professional organizations, like the American Counseling Association to shape policy and the future of counseling.

Furthermore, employment in higher education provides a level of job security and higher earning potential compared to other counseling positions. Depending on the university, professors work towards tenure, which provides job security and prestige in the field.

Admission requirements vary from program to program, however in general, doctoral programs require:

  • An application,
  • Transcripts from previous universities,
  • A writing sample or written statement,

Some programs require GRE scores, and some require in-person interviews as part of the application process. Applicants should be ready to explain their research focus and career goals through their writing sample or interview.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the outlook for career counselors is projected to grow at 4% between now and 2034, which is as fast as other occupations. This demand will continue the demand for professors who teach and train future counselors. The outlook for postsecondary teachers is expected to grow faster than average. The salary for postsecondary teachers is $83,980 per year in May 2024.

The most common career path for a doctorate in counseling is to become a professor in counselor education. However, practitioners with a doctorate in counseling can also work as supervisors and as advanced counselors in schools, researchers, or administration in counseling organizations.

Is a doctorate required to become a school counselor?

To become a school counselor, a master’s degree is typically required for certification. A doctorate is not required.

Can I earn a PhD fully online?

Multiple schools offer the option to complete a PhD fully online or online with a few in-person residencies. Online programs provide additional flexibility for students who are working full time or who cannot relocate to complete their PhD work.

How long does it take to complete a doctoral program?

Each program has different requirements, however a doctoral program typically takes three years to complete. Each program will have a range and an upper time limit for students who take more than the standard amount of time to complete the degree.

Is CACREP accreditation important at the doctoral level?

CACREP accreditation is confirmation that a doctoral program aligns with rigorous content standards and has demonstrated alignment with the highest standards and criteria in the counseling field. Learn more about CACREP accreditation.
